The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, affiliates, dietetic practice (DPGs) and member interest groups (MIGs), share the responsibility for member recruitment and retention. It is important to jointly build on the Academy’s existing recruitment and retention activities in order to gain new members most effectively. Here are a number of programs for affiliates to help promote the benefits of Academy membership.
Recruitment and Retention Toolkit
Please encourage your Membership Chair, New Member Liaison and/or Board members, to use the Academy’s Recruitment and Retention Toolkit, which is available online at www.eatrightPRO.org/membershipresources. The toolkit includes email and letter templates, brochures, applications, flyers and PowerPoint Presentations that can enhance your recruitment and retention efforts.
The Academy offers the Refer a Colleague Program from July1 to September 1 as a grassroots recruitment program for individual members. “Referral” credit is based off of the name/information entered into the “Who referred you to join today?” area of the membership application. Both you and the new member you refer will be eligible to win complimentary Academy membership for the upcoming dues year.
Career Start Dues Program
The Career Starter Dues Program offers reduced dues rates for members in their first five years of Active category membership eligibility. The graduated dues are offered in a tiered structure based on the RDN or NDTR eligibility date on file with the Commission on Dietetics Registration (CDR). Dues increase incrementally each year for up to five years to help members get established in the profession. Graduation date can be used in lieu of eligibility date for those who do not pursue a CDR credential.
Membership Prospect Contact Information Form
A form for membership chairs of affiliates, DPGs, MIGs, and Academy Groups as well as educational institutions, diversity liaisons and student liaisons to keep track of contact information for prospective members. Mail, fax or email completed forms to the Academy, so individuals can receive information about joining the Academy.
Selecting a State Affiliate Dietetic Association
Academy members may select one state affiliate dietetic association by indicating their preferred state dietetic association when joining or renewing membership.
The Academy is only able to assign one affiliate designation as part of a membership package. However, certain affiliates may offer a ‘friends’, ‘support’ or other like-program to those who qualify for Academy membership and wish to join their affiliate for an additional fee. Members who wish to join a second affiliate must contact that association to see if they offer such a program.

The Academy’s membership categories, applicant qualifications and any related applications or brochures can be found online at www.eatrightPRO.org/membershipinfo. The Academy’s membership categories and qualifications are governed by the House of Delegates and can be found in the association’s bylaws. All new and rejoining members are encouraged to join online at www.eatrightPRO.org/join to get the most accurate dues amount.
Dues General Information
Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics membership dues must be paid in full based upon the membership category. Membership and Academy group dues are non-refundable and non-transferable. Academy dues include an allocation of 20% for membership in the state affiliate.
Academy membership status is separate and distinct from current/former status as an RD/RDN or DTR /NDTR with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). For issues relating to RD/RDN or DTR/NDTR credentials, contact CDR at 800/877-1600 Ext/ 5500 or email@example.com.
Q: What is the membership year? When does membership lapse?
A: The Academy’s membership year runs from June 1 through May 31 regardless of when a person joins. If membership dues are not paid by May 31, the member is considered a non-renewing member. The non-renewing member will no longer receive any Academy member benefits and will not be able to access the Academy’s member-only website, or hold membership in an affiliate, DPG, MIG or NDEP, etc. When membership lapses and that non-member wishes to rejoin, a $25 processing fee is accessed.
Q: Are dues refundable or transferable?
A: Academy, DPG, MIG and NDEP dues are not refundable or transferable.
Q: Is there a membership category for those who are stay-at-home moms?
A: The Academy does not have an ‘inactive’ membership category.
Q: How does the applicant select a State Affiliate Dietetic Association?
A: Academy members may select one state affiliate dietetic association by indicating their preferred state dietetic association when joining or renewing membership. If no selection is made, the applicant will be assigned an affiliate based upon the state dietetic association that corresponds to their primary address of record. Applicants with foreign or APO/FPO addresses who do not select an affiliate will be assigned to the American Overseas Dietetic Association (AODA).
Q: Who can join a Dietetic Practice (DPGs) / Member Interest Groups (MIGs) Group and Nutrition and Dietetic Educators and Preceptors (NDEP)?
A: Only Academy members may join any dietetic practice group (DPG) or member interest group (MIG) or NDEP. Student pricing is available based upon the DPG/MIG. Students may not join NDEP. The Academy encourages members wishing to join Academy Groups after June 1, to do so online to get the most accurate pricing.
Q: Can non-RDNs or non-NDTRs join the Academy in the Active membership category?
A: Yes, there are three ways an individual can join the Academy as an Active member. These include:
